Pedantic comment: in the era shown they were pushed by steam tugs. Towing came with diesel tugs.
Official name: Compartment boats.

Does that level of pedantry require a special beige cardigan?

Impressed all the same that people know this stuff. Knowledge only works if people know it.

If you grew up in the Great Metropolis Tom Puddings were part of everyday life.However, I rarely saw them moving on the canal so I will admit that until very recently I thought they were pushed by the diesel tugs.

Now soaring to new heights of pedantry, I have found (1) that steam tugs only pushed in the very early days, they were soon replaced by more powerful steam tugs tugging longer trains. Photos of steam tugs towing on (2). Elsewhere there do also seem to be photos of diesel tugs pushing, particularly a tug called Caywood Hargreave, but possibly only around docks and staithes.
