Ive just been given a set of tyres to try out by my local bike shop - they are 700X25 CONTINENTAL GRANDSPORT RACE - maximum 120 psi - i would like some advice/comments please

Hi,

I will point out that as you say you are 74, you are no spring chicken (like me), which means unlike a typical
young rider than can apply enough power through the pedals to literally moreorless float on the seat and
handlebars tanking along, your experiences with tyre pressures will be very different.for a given tyre size.

You want about 15% tyre drop typically, and in your case likely somewhat more, for best speed.
Skinny tyres at low pressures pinch flat and roll like treacle due to too to much tyre drop..
IMO you should go for nice 28mm tyres at least, with appropriate pressure for your
weight, and in reality for the way you ride somewhat higher tyre drop.

At a similar weight I use a 32mm rear and 30mm front.

rgds, sreten.
