PPS Andyfromotley................was it you we saw when were dropping down into Otley from Farnley? It looked like you but by the time I had put face and name together we had passed.

It could have been me - wearing black shorts, a white helmet and a Kelme top covered by a gilet, and riding a blue Trek Pilot. I passed a couple of you going up the hill to Farnley, but it wasn't until I'd gone past that it dawned on me that I had just passed Colin J on his trusty Basso. I don't think I know the rest of you, but I went past on the way down into Otley as you were taking it easy to allow the rest to catch up.

I was out on my own from Leeds en route to Masham.

For those who don't know, I know Colin from the days of the old C+ forum.

Sounds like a tough ride lads, and Colin was trying to convince me it would be easier than our normal forum rides
What is the 'injury' you had Colin? ;)

Will hopefully get over for another 1 or 2 rides before the year is out, am also looking to do the Jodrell bank ride with Dan-bo and others in a few weeks, I last did it towards the end of 2009 my first year of riding and found it very tough, be interesting to see how I fair now that I know what real hills are

Oh, hi Andrew - I didn't spot that it was you, but I did spot the Kelme jersey under the transparent gilet! My pal Bill further up the road always liked that kit and I was going to mention it to him, but forgot.

No, the andyfromotley lookalike (or actual one!) was riding in the opposite direction to us and is Andy, from Otley, not Andrew, from Leeds!

TBH - I was a bit caught out by it! It was very windy all day which was often quite energy-sapping.

The 'injury' was in fact two 'injuries' both caused by obesity and sloth! I'm so heavy that I have to put an awful lot of effort into going uphill, and I'm so unfit that it strains my back doing so. The other thing is that I'm putting an awful lot of pressure on my bum and it starts to complain after 40 miles or so. When I'm lighter, the pressure is less, and I'm also strong enough then to take more weight on my legs by turning higher gears.

I'm going to make an effort to get a good ride in at weekends, and try and get 2 or 3 other shorter rides in during the week, such as the one with Calum (and maybe Shaun?) tomorrow. If I keep that up, eventually I'll get back to where I was a few years ago and you lot won't have to hang about for me any longer!

Well five of us braved the elements. #snip#

Wow! How long did all that take? I was doubtful I'd be able to keep up as it would've only been my second ride after four months off the bike (and prior to that I'd only been commuting 11 miles a day rather than doing proper long rides).

Not wanting to hold anyone up, I did my own ride on a similar route. Took me 3 hours 45 minutes on my single-speed with 42*18. Fortunately I only had to walk in one place (the steep bit just after crossing the A59).

Next weekend I'll be doing something else if the weather is good. Maybe take the bike in the car up to Thruscross and carry on where I left off, or possibly up to Settle and do a loop there.

Hi Tim,

42 x 18? Single speed? Up those hills? What were you thinking of ?

On that evidence I have a suspicion we would be trying to keep up with you.

We did the route in 6 hours but actual moving time was 4 hours 11.5mins Tea stop, repairs, getting back together etc Moving speed averaged out at 13.8mph so not exactly burning up the tarmac. The stats are here:

I'm not surprised you got off on the climb after the A59 . I had a 34 x 28 on and it was still heavy going.

I'll perhaps organise a shorter route in September for anyone who likes the idea of a ride but would prefer fewer hills and miles. Keep your eye out for it and maybe we will see you then.

I thought I'd read somewhere once that single-speed and fixed were a good idea.................:reading:

Cool heart-rate data! :becool: My bike doesn't even have a speedo at the moment. I had to put my route on the website to find out how far I'd been.

Forty miles might be good, but if it's too flat I'll spin-out while you disappear into the distance. Maybe I'm incompatible with people who ride sensible bikes.

Seeing as how you are a dab hand at fixed riding:

I've not had it long, so at the moment it's as supplied (i.e. with a freewheel). No doubt I will try fixed in the future, probably when I've worn out the current fittings.

Does everyone have to hire a bike or can you share with someone else? Just thinking, I might be happy with a quick whizz for 5-10 minutes.

I'm not sure.

For those who haven't been on a track before the coach takes you to one side for 15 mins and talks you through the bike, how to ride the track, track etiquette, stuff like that. The bikes are all fixed wheel and have no brakes.
Getting used to that doesn't take long but it is as well to know what to expect.

Also the velodrome management need names and addresses for insurance too so bearing that in mind it probably wouldn't be an option.

I think there will be at least half of us who will be new to the track.

I had been wondering about how they manage the risk of having complete novices doing things like reaching for brakes that aren't there. Think I'll try and find a sprocket and lockring for mine and see what it's like on tarmac before I try it on a track.
