HAHAHAHAHA! Cycle chat with a twist? I don't think any of us will be 'looking our best' if temperatures don't exceed 20 degrees...
It's looking like it might be mild (15 degrees) with a mixture of showers and sunny spells, and a strong westerly wind (15 mph with gusts above that).

That's the ticket!

(BTW - I fixed my slow puncture. It was caused by the tiniest piece of glass that I've ever found in one of my tyres. I had to put specs on to see it and get it out. I only found it by marking where the valve was relative to the tyre, immersing the tube in water to see where bubbles of air were forming, and examining the tyre the same distance from the valve. There was a tiny hole, and I couldn't feel the glass with my finger until I bent the tyre to make it protrude.)

I fitted some new pedals this evening. They are lighter than my old pair by almost 80 grams so those hills hold no fears for me now!!

Why were the old ones so difficult to get off?

I had to check to see if some bugger hadn't welded them in place.

Ho ho! (Actually, it's a foot long, though I don't use it as a rule!)

That's because the left hand pedal has a left hand thread! ;)

Calum/colly - my internet connection is down so I may not be able to check this thread again once I go home from my friend's house. If there is any change of plan, text me before 08:00 tomorrow and I'll do likewise, otherwise see you at Leeds station at 09:45 colly!

Damn. I have just realised that my van is crammed full of stuff. No room for bikes!!

Cue a half hour of unloading and finding a place for it all.

That's a pain... Just to confirm, we're meeting at the car park on the left, just before you reach Bramhope? (The one linked on my opening post) I expect you'll overtake me in the van somewhere between the top of Leeds and the start!

All set for tomorrow then ?

Weather doesn't look like it's not going to be poor nor good. Not too warm with a westerly wind.

I expect I'll be at Golden Acre just after 10 assuming Colin's train arrives on time. If there is any delay just set of without us and we will catch you up I'll text you.

Hi, I've been lurking on this thread for a few days without registering.

Thinking of coming on the ride but not sure if I'll be able to keep up. I suppose I could bring my map in case I get dropped off the back.

If I come I'll be on a Yellow bike, probably with a Yellow cycling shirt. Am I right in thinking the meet time is now 10:00?

Hi Tim,

Be good to have you along. You will have no trouble keeping up.

We always stay together anyway. Those that get to the tops of hills wait just as those who can bomb down wait for those that can't.

10 am it is.

Well five of us braved the elements. Me, Bokonon, Calum, ColinJ and Bill, Colin's mate over from Tenerife.

Colin and Bill arrived from Halifax on time at Leeds Station. I was waiting for them and we got to the start at Golden Acre Park around 10.15. Calum had texted to say he had some problems and would meet us en route at Otley.

So we set off around 25 past 10 in a light shower. That lasted all of about 10 mins, if that, and apart from that we had no rain all day. Sunny and cloudy in equal part I'd say.

We got to Otley at ..............?? don't know what the time was, and pulled over at the bottom of the climb to wait for Calum, who, right on time, turned up no more than a minute after we did.

Cue the long slog up out of Otley. Not really so bad but it starts off kind of steep and then eases a bit with a couple of kinks on the way up. Just under 3 miles and 700 ft of climbing from the bottom of the climb to where we waited to get back together. Just enough to get us nicely warm.

All together again we crossed the moor passing Timble and Clifton and dropping down to Blubberhouses. Nipping across the A59 we started the climb up to the turn to Thruscross Reservoir.

1.7 miles and 320 ft later we again waited so as to re-group. The mapping says the climb has a maximum gradient of 11.1% but I am pretty sure we all know that there are a couple of sections nearer to 25%. It's a real leg breaker.

So together again we dropped down to cross the dam wall of the reservoir and haul ourselves back up the other side. Thats another 200+feet of climbing in less than a mile with sections around 14%

From there it was a nice steady more or less downhill to Summerbridge where we turned towards Harrogate and eventually pitched up in Rilpey where we stopped for a break in the Castle Tea Rooms.

On to Knaresborough some 7 miles away where I stopped to see why I had some odd rattling on my bike. I thought it was a loose bearing on the front hub but after finger tightening it as best I could, it made no difference.

Just the other side of Knaresborough I stopped again and discovered it was my cassette that had come loose. A bit of fettling and we were on our way again down to Wetherby, out the other side to Linton and through East Keswick.

By this time Colin was having problems with a long standing injury and was suffering big time so he was looking forward to the end of the ride. Sadly the road from east Keswick into North Leeds has some short sharp climbs on it and by the time we stopped shortly before the turn to Eccup Reservoir Colin was looking the worse for wear.

Anyhow not being one to wimp out Colin put a brave face on things and stayed cheerful all the way back to where he and Bill, Calum and Bokonon broke off and took the thankfully downhill roads back into Leeds and the station.
I rode back to the car park at Golden Acre Park and collected my van.

Colin and Bill had another 8 miles to ride on to Hebden Bridge after arriving back at Halifax Station.

Around 56 miles in all with Colin and Bill doing a a few more.

Thanks guys. See you all soon.

ps. Anyone who couldn't make it ....not to worry. I'll sort out another ride for the end of September so maybe you could pitch up and tag along. You'll be more than welcome.

PPS Andyfromotley................was it you we saw when were dropping down into Otley from Farnley? It looked like you but by the time I had put face and name together we had passed.

Just got back from work - look at the bloody time!! Absolutely, completely, entirely knackered, I don't expect to surface until about 11 tomorrow - it's gonna be amazing!

Thanks to all for a very pleasant day's cycling, and an extra shout out to Colin for making it to the end without whinging, despite suffering from an injury. Also, thanks to Bokonon for seeing the gents down to the station so I could get back and relax for a bit before work.

Tired Calum, off to bed. :hello:

Hi guys - I've finally got my internet back after nearly 3 days without it!

Thanks for the lift from the station colly. I felt a bit of a wimp for not riding up to Golden Acre park but I really didn't fancy riding uphill in traffic. It wasn't so bad going back the other way because we could keep up with it most of the time.

I think you and Calum are being too polite to describe my problems as an injury! Let's face it - I'm too fat and unfit and the pain I was suffering comes from that. Yes, I really was struggling. I was quite surprised by how hard the first half of the ride was. The elevations we reached were relatively low compare to some of our rides but the relentless steep little ups and downs really trashed me!

Thankfully, the weather improved through the day because doing that ride in steady rain would have been horrid.

With the ride back down into Leeds plus a return trip to Halifax, I ended up doing 77 miles. Bill had an extra round trip from Todmorden so he did 85. He was very close to bonking by the time we got back to Hebden Bridge so he dashed into a shop and refuelled himself with flapjacks.

See y'all for the next forum ride!

(My back and bum are sore today, but I should be okay for that 25-miler tomorrow Calum. Let me know what time you will be getting in to Hebden Bridge station, or if there is a change of plan.)
