Going For A Stroll.
On a warm spring day in 1944, a man strolled from his apartments on the 4th floor of the building he was living in and proceeded up the avenue toward the giant archways at the end. The building he left was near the opposite end of the avenue by the rail station. In the middle of his walk he stopped for a seat beneath a large chestnut tree that lined the wide through-fare (indeed he believed it to be the widest in the city) and pondered the following bit of interesting information. The building he was staying at was on a street with more then twenty addresses but certainly fewer then five hundred and all numbered one, two, three, four, etc from start to finish. The sum of all the addresses from one right up to, and including, his were exactly half of the sum of all the addresses from one up to, and including, the last.

What is the man's name?

Yes, the man's name is What.

Blood runs in Transylvania.
Sheerluck Holmes was called to Transylvania to solve some cases of vampirism. Arriving there, he found the country inhabited both by vampires and humans. Vampires always lie and humans always tell the truth.
However, half the inhabitants, both human and vampire, are insane and totally deluded in their beliefs: all true propositions they believe false, and all false propositions they believe true. The other half of the inhabitants are completely sane: all true statements they know to be true, and all false statements they know to be false.
Thus sane humans and insane vampires make only true statements; insane humans and sane vampires make only false statements.
Holmes met two sisters, Lucy and Minna. He knew that one was a vampire and one was a human, but knew nothing about the sanity of either. Here is the investigation:
Craig (to Lucy): Tell me about yourselves.
Lucy: We are both insane.
Craig (to Minna): Is that true?
Minna: Of course not!
Did Holmes learn the vampire's identity?

A Man And A Lift.
A man who lives on the tenth floor takes the lift down to the first floor every morning and goes to work. In the evening, when he comes back; on a rainy day, or if there are other people in the lift, he goes to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the seventh floor and walks up three flights of stairs to his apartment.
Explain why?

Philosopher's Clock
One absentminded ancient philosopher forgot to wind up his only clock in the house. He had no radio, TV, telephone, internet, or any other means for telling time. So he traveled on foot to his friend's place few miles down the straight desert road. He stayed at his friend's house for the night and when he came back home, he knew how to set his clock.
How did he know?

I'm sure that when he carried home the coffee table he'd bought he went directly to the tenth floor.

The man in the lift is quite short. When he goes out, he can reach the button for the ground floor, but when he comes home, he can't reach the button for the10th floor. If someone else is in the lift, he can ask them to press the button for him.
And if it's been raining, he can poke it with his umbrella...

He's too short to reach above the 7th floor button unless he has his umbrella to extend his reach on wet days.
