Is it something to do with roman numerals? The way the question is worded suggests the 3 elements are not connected to each other

Got it (I think)....but my answer is a bit tenuous

SIX - IX = S
XI - X = I
XL - L =X

Frail rope = Achilles, 'tying' the foot to the leg
