Another bloody puncture tonight!!...there you are I have said the word...I am so mad..2 this week...i hate those bloody gp 4 seasons....piece of wire went through the tyre tonight... ultra hardshell gatorskins on order...Iets hope it solves the problem...I want to cycle not to be constantly upending the bike.....

If you are puncturing regularly on GP4S, then you are unlikely to puncture less on gatorskins - they will not be a magical remedy.

As above, it's possible you may have some sharp residue left in the tyre casing - it's also possible that your tyres may be over-inflated, which will not help. It's also possible that you may just be riding on sh1t roads, in which case, think about some other routes...

It does seem that different riders have different experiences with the same tyres.
It appears the best way to choose is to try them yourself.

The 4 seasons are better than gatorskins.

Think you've been unlucky, or is it worn ?

I have come to the conclusion that tyres become in fashion for a while and in a few months time people are going to be talking about anything but the 4 seasons.

I remember reading about Ultra Gatorskin as a really good tyre maybe 3 years ago and 4 seasons even before that. 18 months ago I wanted to try out the Ultra Gatorskin and a quick search here to check they were still popular came out with Marathon Plus as the tyre in fashion. Right now the tyre in fashion seem to be the 4 seasons again ^_^.

Done 1500 miles on Ultra Gatorsking with zero punctures and I can't complain.

If you are getting this many punctures so close together you sure there isn't something else wrong? Something still stuck in the tyre? Something inside the rim? Dodgy innertubes?

I've been running 4 seasons for over a year and only had one puncture on them in that time. Although I wrecked one blowing it out when my brake blocks went misaligned!

The first puncture was caused by a small sharp piece of glass which I found and removed...and the second by a small piece of wire which I found and removed....on both occasions the "foreign object" easily penetrated the tyre.....I have both tyres inflated to 120psi...which may be a tad too high...but I previously kept my gatorskins at 110 psi with no problems.

If you using 23/25's then 120psi is the maximum and 115psi for the 28s but this is not the Continental recommended values. Although I tend to inflate to the maximum with no problems.

I'm around 70kg and for normal road use, I run all my tyres at around 90psi. Don't know what your weight is, but if you are running 120 - try dropping down to 100. At the very least, you will get a better ride....

Puncture resistant tyres make a difference, but there's a few things the rider can do:
  • Ride out from the gutter
  • Keep tyres pumped up hard
  • Avoid potholes and if one is unavoidable, unweight the bike when riding through
  • Check the tyre weekly and remove flints/glass.
  • When changing tube, make sure it's not trapped between the tyre and rim
From a which tyre perspective, Bontrager Racelite Hardcase are durable and very puncture resistant. They're also quite cheap compared to the Conti offerings. The downside is that the ride can be little harsh compared to tyres with a softer compound.

Another cheap recommendation is Michelin Lithion 2's. I commute on these and they roll better than the Conti 4 Seasons I had. Resistance to flats is good too.
