I find white shoes bouncing up and down on the pedals get me noticed.

Yellow ones as well, certainly notice them driving, flash of yellow through the windows

Except hi-viz doesn't appear to work, or at least big blocks of it don't work:

It appears big blocks of hi-viz means at a distance, motorists identify cyclists as street furniture. I read somewhere that the best thing for conspicuity (at night) is helmet torch and retro-reflectives on the ankles.

Today from a distance was this big red blob that I sort of sensed was a Google maps camera perched up.
No it was a motorbiker with an extreme 'be seen' helmet. It worked excellently.
