Sometimes it’s observing how they treat others. How do they treat someone in a shop, how do they treat a waitress, how do they treat a person of colour, how do they treat people who work for them (if you’re ever able to observe). Some people are sweetness and light when they consider themselves with their peers but can be bloody awful to those they consider “other”.

Spot on. Being gratuitously rude to people who are in no position to answer back is a particularly nasty form of bullying.

At work we would often ask the receptionist what she thought of job interview candidates, first impressions and all that. If someone was rude to our reception staff they didn't make it past 1st interview.

in general good idea maybe, though i well remember going for an interview for a PR position where the woman interviewing me for reasons best known to herself stressed and stressed the importance of being nice to what might be seen as "lower" members of staff.
Don't know why she brought this up - it was rather bizarre.
And it was in any case clear to me that she was a posing toe-rag - and indeed that her very reason for interviewing me was fraudulent,

I was warned about that - as I expect a lot of people were

but I still saw a fair few interview candidates treat staff badly

When I was a teacher we had students showing prospective teachers where thye needed to go. We always used the nice kids that we knew well and asked them about the candidates after

AT one interview I went to I didn't get the job but the Head commented that it was good that I thanked all the kids that held doors open for me - he also said he wished more of the current staff did the same!

I have found that if someone has a 5 year career plan then you need to keep an eye on them

Everyone I have worked with that has one has been ruthless in achieving it - if you are involved in something with them then they will get any glory going - you will get all the blame
WIth one bloke I learned to make sure everyone knew what was my part and what was his - then when it went wrong they could see who was at fault.
I actually worked well with him - after a while he realised that blaming me tended to backfire. not because I was brilliant - but just because other people trusted and respected me because I always helped them.
