If you are ever on the coast in the far north (of England), a few in North Shields and South Shields and surrounding area:

Green Lane Fisheries - away from town centre, and, highly recommended. South Shields

Colmans, which wins all of the "awards" in the local press, but, is not my personal favourite. South Shields

Colmans Seafood Temple, if you want poncy sit down meal. South Shields

Waterfront, North Shields Fish Quay (actually a wide choice here)

Waterford Arms, Seaton Sluice, This is a pub, but, gets highly recommended, just off the NCN 1

Not Fish and Chips, but seafood, Latimers, Seaburn, Sunderland

Can I recommend R&T fish bar Glastonbury,Excellent

The Wetherby Whaler in Wetherby always used to be good, it's a few years since I've been though.

In Selby there's Mr C's which isn't cheap, but very good.

Agreed, the original Whaler was great, even better when the Wharfe wasn't in flood, & you could sit by the weir with them, or risk being mobbed by Ducks at the Wilderness car-park

I know the couple (or the wife at least) who own (owned??) the one in Wistow

Eastwoods in Skipton. They serve three different sizes of fish and even the smallest is bigger than usually seen elsewhere.
The only one we've been to in Skipton was (... looks at mapping) on Belmont Bridge (Busy Lizzies)

You’d think so wouldn’t you but so many times you’re handed a tasteless soggy mess.
I wonder if that's anything to do with the polystyrene trays they now come in?

There's a chippy near me that, if you eat them straight away are good, but if the lid is closed and you wait five or ten minutes they go soft, it's as if they are stewing inside the tray because it doesn't breath.

There's one for the inventions thread, gortex chip wrappers.

I think we can deduce there are a fair few good chippies in the UK ^_^
Only had one good experience abroad, Bretts Seafood in Hong Kong, alas no longer there.
*discounting fabulous frito misto+frites places all over the Med!

There's a good place in Shap up in Cumbria, it also has a small eat in section, can't remember the name though. Considering that it's a one horse town it'll probably be the only one there.

Silloth on the coast near Carlisle has a good chippy on the corner of the green, and also a lovely bakery not far along the road as well.

I suppose when they were sold in newspapers that paper was breathable to an extent.so the food didn't soak up the steam it was giving off.

This is so wrong mr moody and I am afraid shows that you will never be knighted with the holy chip. Off to the frozen food/microwave aisle with you while we continue to seek the grail.

We make our own fish chips in this household. The hardest part, though hard is a relative term in this instance, is getting the right consistency of the batter.

I must confess, I worked as an assistant chef in two Italian restaurants as a student and for a little while after. If ever, you're Oop North, you're welcome to pop round for some homemade fish and chips at Moody towers.

I recommend that you avoid the chip shop on Taunton Rd opposite Balsall Heath Park. The fish is white slime in a greasy batter and the chips have a cheesy aftertaste.
