Another one, The Wooden Hut in Heywood, Lancs. Turn of junction 19 of the M62 and head north, up Middleton Road for about half a mile, then turn right to Charles Street.

It's as it says, a wooden hut at the end of a terrace, an old style chippy that never dissapoints.

Do they use a traditional range?

If you're up in The Smoke one of the best is The Seashell in Lisbon grove just up from Marylebone Station.

It's not difficult to get fish and chips right is it?

It's not as if you're cooking a complex dish with an multitude of herbs and spices that need to be added at the right time and in the right quantity.

You’d think so wouldn’t you but so many times you’re handed a tasteless soggy mess.

Reading one of Stuart Maconie's fine books I came across an enthusiastic recommendation for grandma pollards in/near Todmorden.

But a quick search seems to say that it is now permanently - ie not a temporary covid blight - closed.

Is it?

Perhaps @ColinJ can help?
Yes, it HAS closed down. It was in Walsden, about 3 km up the A6033 from Todmorden.

I never went in there but went past it many times and noticed the smell of the fish and chips cooking. I saw last year that it was no longer open. There was a sign in the window thanking loyal customers.

I found THIS article explaining that the owner (Mr Pollard junior) had retired in 2019, aged 80. I don't know why the business wasn't sold on as a going concern. Maybe he didn't want somebody from outside the family to use the name? Or maybe the fact that the road is prone to flooding had something to do with it? (Though precautions had been taken.)

Thanks Colin - the wonders of the friendly cyclechat club as a source of information on anything worth knowing.
A pity that their secret wasn't passed on to new bearers of the holy flame/molten fat.
Over to you with an alternative recommendation for folks awheel amidst the dark vale.
Maybe I'll try to contact mr maconie with the unfortunate news for the next edition.
