I'm 5' 9'' too. I bought a 56 size Cube - size is just right for me. My LBS has this bike, looks just right for your partner, but £400. Go on, treat her ^_^

That's a nice bike. Can you tell me anymore about it. New guy here and some things like brakes and stuff mean nothing to me until google is abused lol.

As a virtually new rider myself and similar in a lot of respects to what you want to achieve cycling wise, I'm going to throw a curved ball at you. I recently picked up a mid 90's mountain bike for next to nothing. It's in virtually new condition and only required a little fettling to get it to how I want it. There seem to be a lot of people clearing out sheds with a fair number of old, but relatively little used cycles appearing for sale.

My plan is to use that for a while until I know what I want from a cycle and upgrade from there at some point in the future. For now, it's doing everything I want and allowing me to maintain sensible average speeds for my ability. It probably won't be high on anyones list to be stolen either, so there may be a hidden bonus there. If you're cycling for fun and exercise, maybe that's an option for you too? Your local bike shop will appreciate the business to give it a once over for you, set it up correctly and want to look after you ready for when you want to upgrade later.
I bought a 1990s steel hybrid (Marin Stinson) a couple of years ago and have since cycled around 5000 miles on it. It cost me well under £100, and did need some work, which probably would have cost £150 in a good bike shop.

Is there a cycle project near you that does up and sells older bikes?

I haven't seen it. I will say from the spec. that it looks a good bike. Aluminium frame with steel forks is fine for a hybrid. Basic Shimano equipment is certainly good enough for a starter bike. Mechanical discs should provide good stopping power. Weight is about what you should expect for this kind of bike at this price point. There's no suspension in the forks (making it a better road bike IMHO). Personally I'd have no qualms about it and would happily ride it.

If you need help with delivery - just ask me.

What you've done, of course, if you've put slightly narrower tyres on it, is create a modern hybrid in all but name ^_^
This is very true. However, it still has it's original 1995 knobblies on it at the moment. I suspect it has the original tubes too, but it's all holding air ok, so I won't worry too much just yet. I'll most likely put more road oriented tyres on it when the time comes.

My bargain basement 1996 GT Outpost Trail bought for the princely sum of £25. I've spent a little on it, but it's mostly original (apart from the seat) and stands me in well under £100 all in including fitting lights, pump etc.

Yes, that's a hybrid as currently defined
