i wouldnt agree, you have put forward evidence but many not just me believe it is flawed. Many examples to the contary have been put forward but you dont consider this sufficient.

You have stated you believe its flawed but the limit of the evidence you provided is "because I say it is" So remind me what counter evidence you have put forward

And back to the question that hasnt been answered yet, do i have to justify why i wear a helmet?

I doubt that saying it again will make any difference. You didn't register the previous N times you have been told the answer to that question.

arrhh, so i dont have to justify it yet you ask for evidence? do you not see your contradiction?

Joe, do you see what i mean now?

So you dont think the benfits of a safety helmet are worth it? Someone at this point could ask you to prove it, however i respect it is your opinion of the safety benefits and as such Im willing to accept your point of view, as your point of view.

So at this point i feel the threads have identified 2 categories of people, those who feel helmets are of benefit enough to wear them and those who dont, or is there a third category?

and this one cumberlin

just read again so edit to reflect

i do respecft others opinions not to wear, i dont mind as ive stated before, it is me who has been asked why i wear one, so i answer and that makes people angry, can you tell me why?
so if nobody is bothered why keep asking me?
if we are to respect each others opinions why are mine not respected?

Cos you re not towing the party line dont you get it ?

wrong again, more lies, there is a thread for this and my thoughts are there for ll to see, you want to avoid them, why would this be?

So you are now also denying that you have refused to discuss compulsion except on your own terms?

Please feel free to continue to claim that anything you are uncomfortable with is a lie... simply because it is easier than discussing it here.

For the love of...
no one cares about compulsion but you. Don't you get it? Just because someone is in favour of helmets doesn't mean they think people should be forced to wear one. Just because someone recommends a helmet, doesn't mean they think people should be forced to wear one.

Just because you have a fear of compulsion, doesn't mean you have to automatically undermine helmets. No one is undermining your right not to wear one.

Do you not understand that compulsion is not at all relevant? We do not live in a country where it is compulsory to wear a helmet!!!

Now that I've become aware that many people are against wearing helmets and also the idea/threat of compulsion, I've been reading over the many threads covering these topics.

For me, I wear a helmet and a recent accident has given me reasons to justify to myself doing so. However, I didn't always feel that way, certainly not when I started cycling. Can we please park the whole compulsion thing completely for now and focus on what makes people CHOOSE NOT TO wear helmets?

The reasons I see frequently cited are:
1) Statistics can show that death/injury is not that much higher than other everyday activities where people don't wear helmets
2) A belief that the construction of current cycling helmets will not prevent serious injury or death anyway
3) A belief that in certain instances helmets could actutally increase risk upon impact, i.e. increased dissipation of force to the neck

Please don't comment on the whys and wherefores of this - this has already been done to death - although by all means if you have something to add please do so.

What I'd really like to know is whether there are any other common objections / reasons why we don't wear helmets?

Thanks,

Tim

Dont wear one, and I dont need an excuse as to why I dont.

Yeah this is the great paradox isn't it?

I don't think many cyclists want to see helmets become compulsory. Yet the majority (I'm guessing here, I don't know the numbers - so please correct me if I'm wrong, but based on what I see in my area) seem to wear helmets. There seems to be no reliable data proving helmets save lives or reduce injuries, or vice versa. Yet the only way we can fight against helmet compulsion is to discredit them as safety equipment.

and people who wish to wear them, we are told they dont care if we wear one or not and then ask for evidence as to why we wear one, complete contradiction
