I'm using Bic 'sensitive' blades at the moment. I was on the 4 pack Aldi ones for a few years, but I don't shop in Aldi now so I'm on Bic razors now. They're not too wonderful and no way as close a shave as the Aldi ones. I have to go over my head about 3 or 4 times, whereas the Aldi ones did it in 2. The Bics also only last a week or so when I could use the Aldi ones a month. I think I might be going back to Aldi soon.

I started shaving with a DE safety razor, a Muhle R106, a few years ago and can't imagine using anything else. Shaving's a pleasure, not a chore, and it's my little time for self care in the mornings so I'm a bit ritualistic about it. It can be quite a meditative process and it's a much nicer shave than you get with a cartridge system anyway.

I've been using cheapo Shark blades which I seem to get on OK with, but I've just splashed out on some fancypants Japanese Kai blades. They're a whopping three quid a pack but I do like them. Some of the other well known brands really irritated my skin. I also make sure I only order the ones in a cardboard box, I'm trying to cut down on plastic and those little containers are completely unnecessary.

Something to bear in mind:

I'm using Le Pierre Lucien Oud Santal at the moment, the tallow based shaving cream and the aftershave which has a lovely warm, sweet scent. I've also just ordered a refill of my DR Harris Windsor soap which I like and I find the Proraso tubes, particularly the red one, are cheap and actually very good. I can't get on with aftershave balms though, I prefer a good old fashioned splash.

I use a straight razor to tidy the edge of my beard, typically once or twice a week. It's a somewhat rewarding and therapeutic process when in the mood, and after a fair outlay on equipment should basically cost me nowt from now on; with the usual environmental benefits too

Tried once with the cut throat , not very coordinated looking in the mirror holding it , which makes it quite hazardous

It's interesting to see Gillette's recent marketing of their latest DE razor as being specifically a beard and moustache trimmer. It's like they're trying to take advantage of the recent renewed interest in 'proper' shaving but without affecting their core business of crappy cartridge systems and horrible squirty foam.

Indeed - it takes a while to get used to it and I was quite intimidated to begin with, but really you'd have to be a total muppet to do yourself any serious injury with it. I am especially mindful when it's near my eyes though!

Yeah, evidently attempting to capitalise on the current trend for facial hair, just as they've leeched off peoples' lazyness with the existing range of nasty disposible plastic rubbish.

Yet another example of how marketing has driven a product to get ultimately worse, rather than better IMO.

I've never used a DE (preferred the less disposible / more traditional straight) however its ergonomics make it look like a good bet as an edge-tidier... not that I'd buy a Gillette if I did get one!

I can't believe a proper chap such as yourself would use those. 😊
