According to their license application, they will be transmitting from grid reference TM 144 607, which is a farm near Stowmarket, about half way between Ipswich and Norwich. They’re on 648kHz, with 1000W ERP.

Studio is in Strood, with the potential for some content to come from the Ross Revenge

If anyone’s cycling in the vicinity of the transmitter, take a camera and post us some photos. I’d be interested to see the antenna. I’m guessing it’ll be pretty big... (I used to run an AM transmitter of similar power)
... although rumour is that the transmission may have been relocated to the former BBC world service site at Orfordness
The current transmitter site is already marked on Google Maps! I did think about popping up there to see if I could get a photo for you, but it would have meant a 20-25 mile ride directly into today's stiff northerly breze and showers. You'll just have to imagine what it looks like!

I've got next Monday off so a longish ride may just have to mean I swing by that neck of the woods ^_^.
There is still some confusion over the transmitter location and many are suggesting it's Orfordness. My own calculations (with a few maps and a compass) suggest the Mickfield site you quote site is the most likely, but I could be wrong. The signal path from here matches Mickfield precisely.
Is anyone still awake?

When Mickfield was mentioned, I did wonder if they'd hacked into the mast next to the A140

That would be an ideal stick. Probably too costly though sadly for Caroline. (Blasting in here again tonight on 648 with some superb music and blowing co-channel Slovenia away).
It is the ultimate flaw the radio anorak such as me, that test transmissions are always more exciting than the real thing. Though having Caroline back full time is just fantastic.

Given that I should be able to see it from my house, and I can't, I drove past there today. I can't see any sign of a mast at that location - not even a farm communications-size one. You can buy eggs from near there, though. Cue Fox song: Climb aboard the love ship, climb aboard the love ship etc.

Who remembers Laser 558 with Charlie Sea (long howl) Wolf?

[edit] This site says they are broadcasting from Orford Ness

That's certainly what http://tx.mb21.co.uk/gallery/gallerypage.php?txid=1654 claims. I wonder if they mean the 1983 omnidirectional backup mast by "the former standby monopole". It would make more sense than using the south-east-facing directional ones.

1kW! I think BBC 648 used to use 500 and even the backup was 250. But it's sort of funny that Caroline will be on the position marked "BBC WORLD" on old AM dials

It's amazing what you can do with 1KW. The aerial array must be very efficient. Caroline's weekend tests were heard as far as Scandinavia, Germany and west Wales. The Dutch Websdr at Enschede in the east of the country picked it up very well indeed. Seriously impressed and delighted of course!
