I'm sure Pippa can afford it.

It does seem quite expensive, what do you get for that? Any sleeping options, or is it all rough sleeping in the wild?

That is just the registration fee.
RAAM oversees functions at the start and the finish and recruits staff for each Time Station. Each Racer must provide their own support crew and support vehicles. A typical crew is 8-12 people and 2-4 vehicles. It’s the responsibility of the crew to care for the racers by providing food, clothing, medical care, bicycle repair, massage, entertainment and directions.
Once again you do have to do a qualifying event.
Not for teams

Ways to Qualify for Solo RAAM

▪Completing 2- or 4-person Team RAAM.

▪Completing a “RAAM Style” RAAM Qualifying Race (RAAM Qualifier or RQ).Generally, a “RAAM Style” event is one which is of longer distance (at least 350 miles), on public roads, non-drafting and with follow vehicle(s) and support crew.

▪Completing a Time Trial RQ.Generally, a Time Trial event is non-drafting and run on public roads.Since Time Trial events do not involve follow vehicles, racers qualifying by completing a Time Trial RQ will be required to attend a RAAM sponsored Seminar or have crewed for a solo RAAM attempt.

▪Completing the PAC Tour Elite Tour.

▪If a prospective racer is unable to make arrangements to attempt to qualify at one of the listed events, the racers is encouraged to contact the RAAM management to make other arrangements.

▪Racers may petition RAAM to compete in RAAM if they have not met the above standards but feel other accomplishments qualify them to race solo RAAM.Acceptance will be determined by RAAM management and the RAAM management’s decision will be final.

▪At least one rider on a tandem must have qualified for solo RAAM pursuant to these qualification guidelines.

Teams are not required to “qualify” for RAAM.

It's unclear whether or not LEL would count as a qualifying event. It seems, bizarrely, to fall down on the fact you ride LEL unsupported.

LEL and the like are not non-drafting events - so you'd be hard pressed to argue using it as a qualifier.

You can use a 24 hour TT - this year, the Mersey Roads or the Ride 24 (though no aero bars allowed in the latter!) - you need to ride at least 400 miles.

You don't really draft on LEL or not that I noticed.

I think the RAAM RQ style event and the RAAM Time Trial RQ are two different ways of qualifying rather than you need to do both.

I spent good chunks of LEL working in groups - it's a drafting event.

Whether you use RAAM RQ or RAAM TT RQ events to qualify - they both specifically mention non-drafting, so I think you'd not be able to argue the case that you didn't draft anyone for the entire 1400km.

Shu Pillinger rode LEL.

Ah ok.

Probably a moot point anyway as I'd be unwilling to transport my bike to the start let alone pay the entrance fee!
