For the same reason that East Grinstead and West Grinstead are no where near each other.

They are not related:-

Hamm = Home
Ton = Town

A Green Stede is just a green place.

So the southamption was just hamm ton. Then people started adding South, presumably as a direction to get to hamm ton. I imagine Northampton has a similar derivation.

They may also have been to distinguish between Hammton near london, hammton in the South and hammton in the North.
Then of course you have hamm stede - the green town.

Etc.

Thanks, very well explained!:okay:

Why are Southampton and Northampton 127 miles apart via road? Surely both 'amptons' should be close, if not next to each other.🤔

South Shields and North Shields are a mere 7.8 miles apart by road and much closer 'as the crow flies'.

I live in Great Harwood which is less than 5 miles from Little Harwood. Even much closer (about 3.25 miles) if you drive 'over the hill', off the main road.

South Shields & North Shields are even closer via the Tyne Tunnel or the foot ferry, I reckon you could stand on the banks of the Tyne and shout obscenities at the good burghers of North Shields and be heard

Apparently the "shield" is a small dwelling place for fishermen. I love place name etymology.

This is my favourite reasoning for place names courtesy of the late great Terry Pratchett:

“The forest of Skund was indeed enchanted, which was nothing unusual on the Disc, and was also the only forest in the whole universe to be called -- in the local language -- Your Finger You Fool, which was the literal meaning of the word Skund.

The reason for this is regrettably all too common. When the first explorers from the warm lands around the Circle Sea travelled into the chilly hinterland they filled in the blank spaces on their maps by grabbing the nearest native, pointing at some distant landmark, speaking very clearly in a loud voice, and writing down whatever the bemused man told them. Thus were immortalised in generations of atlases such geographical oddities as Just A Mountain, I Don't Know, What? and, of course, Your Finger You Fool.

Rainclouds clustered around the bald heights of Mt. Oolskunrahod ('Who is this Fool who does Not Know what a Mountain is') and the Luggage settled itself more comfortably under a dripping tree, which tried unsuccessfully to strike up a conversation.”
