SpokeyDokey

68, & my GP says I will officially be old at 70!

It gets mentioned a lot on here and I know it is a healthy option.

But....I have tried it on several occasions and I just cannot swallow it due to its lumpy, almost snotty consistency.

Won't go past my tonsils.

Am I on my own with this?

NB: I can do Ready Brek.

I like to mix fresh blueberries or bananas in with mine, then add a Greek yogurt in.

You do realise you can cook it for varying durations of time? You don't need to follow a certain time recommendation. The longer you cook it, the thicker it tends to get. Likewise with leaving it standing.

Try adding more liquid (water or milk) and/or reducing the time you leave it on the hob!

I also do not like thick gloopy porridge, so I add more milk so it can cook long enough to go soft, without going thick and gloopy.

That said, maybe you just don't like it, in that case, eat something else!

It's you Spokey, you're just weird. ^_^

yep I agree you're weird

I did have some organic oats though and they were nasty, bought some ordinary tesco ones and they were much smoother.

have you tried increasing the amount of liquid you make it with? I use the microwave, and have half a mug of oats to a full mug of milk

Just call me Chris...
I like it cold, just fresh oats, milk, and consume before it goes soggy. Delicious!
Can't eat the stuff done properly.
I appear to be alone in that though!

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
1/2 cup raisins, fill to brim and overflowing with oats, into saucepan with1+1/2 cups water, bring to boil, stirring, reduce heat for 4-5 minutes. Allow to cool a little, serve with 3+ tablespoons low fat Greek style yoghurt. Superb!

I like mine with 1/3cup milk, 2/3cup water and 1/3cup oats. Then cooked on the small hob stirred continuously until it's a bit more solid than ready brek (my preferred consistency, if you want it slimier less solid then cook for a shorter period).

Serving suggestion is to add maple syrup, golden syrup or fruit jam

Otherwise how about eating muesli instead?

I've only got into porridge in the last six months. Love it now and have it for breakfast most mornings. I agree with the above and not overcooking it. The microwave sachets (which I use on weekday mornings simply because it's quicker) are quite runny in consistency.

My favourite recipe is the blackberry and apple one here http://www.jamieshomecookingskills.com/recipe.php?title=porridge-toppings No need to add the blackberrys as just the apple with crunchy oats is enough flavour.

I'm with you mate, i think it's nasty but in all honesty i have recently started eating it with added honey, I have it for breakfast in the morning at work, usually while sitting at the desk @ 6.45am, started to use it more regularly along with banana's when riding as well, and my issue with bonking has for now vanished, so i must be doing something right, i am putting it down to replacing bacon sarnies with hot snot aka porridge, albeit sweet tasting snot!
