Omg that brings back some late 1970s memories with the Scalextric track. I had the blue rothmans one.

Always thought it was a Lotus, but google sats it was a Ford. Ugh, suddenly it feels a lot more mundane!

There was a 6 wheel lotus - one of the John Player Specials, but it had the double wheels at the front, not the rear,m and I don't think it ever raced.

The only 6 wheeler to win a Grand Prix was a Tyrrell - also with 4 wheels at the front.

No-one is certain if the Lotus 82 was anything more than a concept on paper. Design similar to the March, two wheels at the front, four at the back. Nor do we know what the Ferrari six wheeled car would have been like. Was it to be a 4-2, like the Tyrrell or 2-4 like the march. Drawings/pictures exist for both.

The main question asked by German car manufacturere: How can we make this stupidly oversized?

BMW's answer:

Oversized or not they're still a tight squeeze for me. I tend to wear rather than drive them.

I don't believe the six-wheeled Lotus ever came to fruition. If it did, you'd be seeing it in various historic gatherings / races etc as you see some of the others that *were* built, like the Williams.

There was a big Lotus celebration at the Goodwood Revival this year (the footage is on the Tube of You), and there was nothing like that in the parade. They did have the 88 though.

I can ask my motor racing historian friend to verify, as this is very much his era of expertise.
