I hope you never meet a car driver doing what they think is safe, on the occasion they are wrong...

Why not just stop and wait, like you're supposed to?

hate to stop my flow so its up and down on the pavement as needed ;)

i will jump red lights , jump on pavement , do this most mornings on a bridge , if lights on red hop on pavement and over the footpath then back on to the road ;) i would slow down for people and move to the side , ive even cycled past police on the beat and they dont bother , if i think its safe i will do it ;)

I just hope you don't do that when I'm driving past as even though I'm a cyclist I will not and do not give quarter to anyone who thinks that the laws concerning driving and RL's do not apply to them (emergency services excluded of course), so jump a light or use a pavement to jump one then don't expect me to make much room for you.

On the other hand ride in a safe legal manner and I'll sit back, pass very wide and make sure I do nothing to put you at risk.

Don't like my way of thinking then tough luck I'm in a van you are on a cycle, I have found that drivers in Norfolk also treat me better when they see I stick to the law, they are not perfect but so far so good.

Had someone do this last night on the journey home (I could tell he wasn't going to stop for the red, just didn't expect him to take to the pavement).

It's illegal[1], and it's a bit bloody rude (imo).

The same person then tried to overtake a bus indicating right (with another stationary bus alongside) and nearly got sandwiched. My theory is that he was delivering transpant organs to a local hospital, and so had to get there as quick as possible before all the ice melted. That, or he was an impatient twat.

[1] But enforced the same way as most traffic law in Britain

In the same way as sometimes, if the road is totally blocked and cars will put a wheel on to a kerb to get past, say, an accident or emergency vehicle, there ARE cases where hopping on and off the pavement is acceptable. Just like there are exceptional cases for most rules on the road. 'Because I want to save a few seconds' is not an exceptional case, its no excuse.

in some instances it can be safer to go through on red.

by example: there is a set of lights on a busy main road to allow traffic to turn/emerge from left. if i wait at the lights i get cars trying to get past as soon as the light goes green, as the drivers know that the road soon narrows which, coupled with the queueing traffic on the other side, means that they will be 'stuck' behind a cyclist.

if i go through left on red: a) i can see right through the junction and there is plenty of room ;) it's safer for me as i have clear air behind and c) because i turn off the road about 200m later, i'm usually out of the way before the cars come through, so no-one gets held up.

it's not in the hc, but it's a considered approach.

Sounds like there was no ice involved, he was trying to deliver them in vitro, so to speak...

(If that's the right term... I mean, fresh, as in, his own...)

If my GCSE latin is right, that would be "in vivo" (in live(?)) "in vitro" is "in glass", usually used for processes/stuff done in labs and petri dishes, and that.

But yes, his chances of becoming an organ donor if he continues to cycle like that are pretty high.

D'oh! of course, it would be in vivo...

Isn't it a running joke that hospital doctors call motorbikers 'organ donors'...

Let me get this straight, if you see someone commit a minor technical infringement on their bicycle you are going to run them over in your van to teach them a lesson?

W@nker!

yes, perfectly legal, and worth doing perhaps if you're in a hurry and know the lights will be a long time. I hardly ever bother though....

But if you dismount and do it you actually get in the way more than if you just cycled slowly as you're taking up more space...

I felt bad tonight a ped crossing that's been switched off for a while was switched on again and called by a ped. They changed almost instantly and I was caught out, I was going too fast on a wet surface . About 1/2 a mile round the corner whilst stopped at lights I had unclipped the left foot, pushed of at green but my foot slipped, it could've been worse if my right wasn't clipped in . Almost instant karma

Shooter..what you seem to forget is that the other guy may be a perfectly upright, decent human being in every other sense of the word. A loving dad, grandad, son, brother..whatever). Hopping on the pavement doesnt give you the right to be their judge, jury and executioner.
Chill a bit ...cos right now, you are making yourself sound 10 times worse than the guy hopping on the pavement.

To be scrupulously fair, shooter didn't say he'd knock someone off, just that he wouldn't bother to give them so very much space...

I agree, none of us have the right really to dish out what we see as punishment, but on the other hand, people who make their own rules up can't expect much courtesy from those of us who don't.
