The whole point of the advice I gave with a quote describing the new Claris, is that the shifters DO NOT have the thumb button. And this (the thumb button) is exactly the feature the OP wants rid of. So why advise him you're 'not sure'? Are you trying to sow doubt in his mind? Or just describing the shifters you have on your commuter, for general interest?

I'm concerned that if he's not careful and buys a set of second-hand Claris off e-Bay (and let's face it new STIs are ruinously expensive) he may be disappointed if he doesn't check.
