As long as I breathe, I attack.
Still cheap than a new bike, not all of us can afford that, my Viking started off as a 7sp triple, the improvements I have made when I have had some cash has made a world of difference, its still quite heavy but I don't race ect.. the closer grouping and low gearing (if choose to make low) currently 26-111" enables me to carry quite a bit of weight without to much of a struggle up hill, its not often I go that low, usually the 38x27 is low as I normally go, and have a good range of gears 12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21-24-27 to keep a good cadence.
So yes changing from an 8sp triple to a 10sp triple is worth it, chances are that it is possible to reuse the FD and RD as well, would need to test to be sure.
Im not allowed a new bike, i have upgraded mine instead , a new frame and its would be nearly a triggers broom :0

OK , now I'm confused. The Triban 3 has STI levers, doesn't it ? Certainly looks that way on the Decathlon website...

Oo, clever. Sounds like a winning formula for sneaking a new bike in, as long as the frame is the same general colour. Do it in bits. Anyone who bans you from another love/bike very probably knows so little about them they would never notice. Rather reminds me of that old song (johnny cash?) About a guy who built himself a car by smuggling bits one by one out of the factory.

the Claris is a straight swap just need to change the brifters.

Now that we have finally established what the issue is (started as: "The reason is that its gears are very clunky") Nigel has pointed the way and the FD and RD will be fine. If you want to replace the brakes (ie calipers) I'd go further up market to make sure they're properly 'better' but maybe you'd find just decent pads would create the improvement in braking power/modulation (assumed) you seek. Lots of good sets of calipers (eg 105) available pre-used on the bay.

"One of the most attractive things about Shimano Claris [8 speed] is the fact it comes with Shimano’s famous STI integrated brake and gear levers. While [their] Tourney uses a pivoting brake lever and thumb button to control gear selection, Claris uses Shimano’s established Dual Control system."

Thanks again everyone. Your replies had been very helpful. This is what I had learned from you.
I can keep the existing front mech which is triple and

1. Change the levers to Claris. I don't need to change anything else.

2. I can change to Tiagra or 105, but I will have to change the rear cog and mech and chain. But more importantly I can keep my wheels. Present 8 gear wheel will take 9 or 10.

Is my understanding correct?

Not sure about this - the Claris levers I had on my commute bike had a pivoting brake leaver and a thumb button.

Yes to 1. A change to Tiagra (10sp) or 105 (11sp) will require more items changing (eg chainset for the 105, for sure). Wheels can take the 8sp cassette you have, or 9 or 10, with chains to match.
Better standard pads to improve the brakes.

Which bit of my post were you not able to comprehend?

I comprehended your post perfectly. You said that Claris uses the Dual Control system, which you contrasted with the Tourney pivoting brake lever. I pointed out that my Claris levers had the pivoting brake lever and thumb button. Not sure what point you're trying to make, or why you're taking such a tone over it.
