Was it an urban myth or was it true the Ferrari didn't want his name on them because they were "only" a V6?

Sort of.

As Friday rightly points out, he created a sub-brand named after his redently deceased son.

They went this way as the V6, and to some extent the V8 (the earlier 308 GT4's were Dino's and not Fezzas for that reason) was seen as a bit feeble, not terribly exotic, even (dare we say it today) a bit effeminate.

So the new branding was conceived to sell these baby models, and if if they dive bombed the mothership brand wouldn't be soiled by such events.

In the end they needn't have worried, and the 206, 356 and 308 GT4 were all excellently received by the public and sold well.

Yet he named it after his son .
He did, but I believe Dino was supposed to be a separate marque

But sold under the Dino brand.

it matters not who made them. They are Dinos, not Fezzas (apart from the later 308GT4s which reverted to Fezza branding.) The owners club drop their collective monocle in their Martini when a Dino turns up with Fezza badges. It's very bad form, the sort of thing only commoners do.

Heck, even randoms on cyclebabbling forum point and quietly sneer ☺️
