I read somewhere that Merc used to make a low-spec model specifically for the European taxi trade without all the luxury features their more bourgeois customers would want. The taxi buyers wanted a very solidly made diesel workhorse but were not fussed about the trim level

When we visited Berlin, there was a lot of beige, basic spec E Class MB Taxi's plying their trade, iirc they were doing starship mileages

My old 911 was a rare non-sport - no spoilers

And it looks so much the better for it.

And it looks so much the better for it.

Looked even better once I fitted 16” Turbo Fuchs and removed the side decals

Do you mean a 993? last of the air cooled 911’s. My money no object car would be a 993 Turbo

Yes, the 993 - last of the air cooled, better handling than the 964, with the much improved Weissach axle. The naturally aspirated Carrera S (2 wheel drive) would be fine for me. Drove a 997 S with the 4 wheel drive and much preferred the 2 wheel drive before getting the 997 3.6. Contrary to all the internet forum/reputation bollox, the car handled brilliantly. Never got out of shape without actually and deliberately setting up a pendulum, even on the track.

A bit of Italia exotica spotted in Bristol yesterday. I'm not usually keen on Ferraris and Lambos but this one was genuinely stunning.

And on a more mundane level, a rather splendid Mercedes turned into a takeaway van. Seen a few converted into hippy camper vans. The Unimog/army truck cab shape appeals to me
