Spotted a rather forlorn Polo coupe on Saturday. Not many around now, hopefully it gets saved.

Mind you, they were horrible to drive!

Very heavy steering, all except the G40 were painfully underpowered.

I still have fond memories of my Polo. OK, there was no servo on the brakes (not a problem when you get used to it, unless you drive another car), and the 1l engine required a lot of encouragement (taking the 270 curve from the M69 to M6 at 60 so I could join the M6 at a sensible pace), and had trouble starting at times.

But still a more enjoyable drive than the Astra 1.3 HiTorq (single point fuel injection) that followed it.

Very nice Merc sports car from the late 60s. Manual gearbox too; though less keen on the white.

Lovely W113 Pagoda, a 280 as well, the best version. I agree with you about the colour, doesn’t really suit it.

Presumably that would have been a six cylinder, which would be a good bit more appealing than a four. They seem to be rather a lot of money these days, so I don't think I'll be buying on, despite likely being rather better made than a 60s Jag or TR

The 280 was an inline 6

Having owned a Triumph Vitesse, I am totally sold on the straight six as a format. Even the basic near agricultural engine in the Vitesse was super smooth. V8s always sound like a bag of spanners to my ears, and despite the technical appeal, a V12 is getting into the fragile exotica bracket; to be fair not because of the layout per se, but the nature of such low production machinery in luxury cars

Pretty little cars, my ex wife had one new in the early 1980’s and my Mother also owned one.

They were actually. Towards the end of production in the 1990s, there was a coupe with a 75 bhp version of the 1.3 with fuel injection and it was pretty lively and quite good on petrol.

My cousin had one. It looked nice and was on 185R60 tyres on nice alloys which seemed to give it plenty of front end grip and it felt like a go kart. It was okay on very well surfaced roads but any bumps really upset the handling. A 205 was far superior dynamically.

I must admit a soft spot for '80s superminis.

My mother had that version, it was navy blue with alloys rather than the pressed steel wheels.
