Looking at the filler on those wings... Learnt something I never knew the other day, the original Morris Minor was design was 4" narrower than the final design and they stuck a 4" filler band down the middle of the bonnet as the metal pressing machines had been made... Allegedly

My parents had a set of encyclopedias in one of them it showed how a modern motorcar was made . It was the original Morris Minor with split windscreen and headlights in the grille .

True. I just wish we would try more ideas to see if it would help, but governments seem to have very few ideas they are prepared to try.

If all new car tyres sold in this country (where possible) were eco tyres it would have a large effect. Its simple, perfectly possible but nothing much happens and there must be many things like that which we could do. I have eco tyres on my classic car and they are way better than the tyres it had on originaly.

Cars weighing maybe double what they did in the 60s or 70s doesn't help !

You'd think with modern engineering techniques and materials cars should be a good bit lighter, even with some of the extra safety stuff they have now. And there's a credible argument that the increased safety of cars hasn't actually saved lives, but it has moved the risk from the users of cars onto pedestrians, cyclists and the like

As a Minor owner I'd heard that before and it makes sense, especially when you look at the styling of the early MM model with low headlanps. However, ... having Googled a few pictures I think if there's any truth in it the extra metal must have been added before production began because the central raised strip appears the same width on the earliest and later cars. That doesn't mean it's not true of course.

I'm not sure I agree with the theory. You're always going to be at significant risk of injury or worse if you're hit by a large heavy thing travelling at speed, regardless of how many soft bits and external safety measures are applied. Unless they can somehow make the tarmac, lamposts and other surroundings softer too.

The story is that Alec Issigonis didn't like the look of the car when they had made a prototype, so got them to cut the car in the middle and move the two halves apart until he felt the design was better balanced.
