John Wayne’s lack of height was often disguised by ensuring that he and his co-stars rode Shetland Ponies, thus making them appear relatively large.

As a direct result, there was a thriving Shetland Pony stud farm located close to Hollywood Boulevard.

Sometimes they couldn't get Shetland Ponies and had to ride Gloucester Old Spots instead. This gives rise to the oft misquoted line in True Grit:
"That's a mighty pig. Pork for a one eyed fat man."
