The tyres are Vittoria Zaffiro (Bike: Defy 3), not sure if these are good or not (But looking online they appear to be cheap), could anyone recommend some tyres which aren't too expensive?

Isn't it a rule of thumb that a new bike comes with rubbish puncture-prone tyres? Should it be the first upgrade to consider?

To an extent yes, though expensive bikes tend to come with good tyres.

Trek bikes, regardless of price, usually come with decent tyres as they own Bontrager.

Turns out the tyres are actually Schwalbe Blizzard's, the LBS must have changed the tyres. And as my suspicions were it was a big ugly thorn that'd went right through and into the tyre, must have picked it up from the footpath, repaired inner tube but it still seems to be losing it's pressure, might just put new inner tube in instead. Oh, it seems the presta valve of the inner tube it came with was bent and snapped off as I was pumping tyre....So if I was to ever need to pump the original inner tube I wouldn't be able to, might just save future hassle by putting new tube in.

It's not. I paid £69 for two mountain bike SMPs last week (bloody LBS's). Still think I got value for money though as I reckon they will save maybe 5 - 7 hours changing and patching inner tubes over their lifetime.

Yes - cant grumble about money spent on tyres.

Depends on what you call "expensive "

I use conti gator skins and if i check them for glass splinters ( i use a bit of cycle path with windscreen shards ) then i can go months without a flat. I had to replace my rear tyre today and it lasted longer than the bottom bracket. The tyre has been replaced with the new conti gator skin hardshell.
