Just got my first puncture and thankfully wasn't too far from home so just walked (I know, I know, I need spare inner tubes with me ), I didn't even clock a total of 100miles yet on the new bike and I already got a puncture, I think it's a thorn (as it looks like one in the tyre) as I saw the farmer cutting the hedges just the other day, but in hindsight I should just try and avoid the 200m off road (well, pretty level dirt path) I do on a road bike and will do in future.

That's the thing with punctures, the feckers simply don't discriminate, (unless your running Schwalbe Marathon Plus').

My rear tyre suffered a huge cut first ride out on my new bike a few months ago, pi$$ed off doesn't cover it as it was so bad I had to buy a new tyre. That got cut up very quickly as well, (Schwalbe Durano S), so I bought Conitnental Grand Prix 4000s as I've used them before, and the other day I found the front one flat and a sliver of glass stuck in it.

Feckin' punctures, if I see the so called puncture fairy I'll rip her feckin' wings off

I went to art college in Carlisle. When I used to ride my bike (an ancient singlespeed Halfords 'gents' bike) in the lanes between Stanwix and Rockcliffe I could more or less guarantee a puncture from thorns. Never had one caused by a thorn since*. There must be something about those Cumbrian thorns,

(although now i've said that, i'll get one on the way home tonight)

Would a 'puncture proof' tyre and a 'puncture proof' inner tube do the trick do you think?

Surely that would offer double protection. Would it ?!!!!!

I was thinking of giving them a go.

Any thoughts?

Mr apollo used to get loads of puntures until he started using schwalbe marathon plus for men.
How many punctures have you had since mr apollo.
Zero.
Schwalbe marathon plus - because your bikes worth it.

My boy of 34 bought a 29er two months back three tubes he has got through the last one gave him the clue to his problem. As all punctures was the same the valves coming away from the tube, the hole in the rim for the valve is the jinx of the flats. My daughter two years ago had her first puncture on her new bike with in the first 1000meters of leaving my house with me and here two boys riding on a easy trail.

I've had my Kilmeston 11 months now, I had my only flat a few months ago, rim side, it turned out they hadn't cleaned up the rims properly when they made them, burs on spoke holes and waste from the manufacturing still present. Had to fix the flat and then clean up both rims. I'm using Bontrager Race lite Hardcases, the tyres that were fitted when the bike arrived never got used, I changed them as soon as the bike arrived, they are still hanging up in the shed.

Don't worry, but don't get caught out again. Tube, a kit and a pump ! Some folk recommend a multi tool - never used to carry one, but it's helped out a few friends since I did.

Minimum is tube, 'p' kit, pump, multi tool, and cash/phone.

Your only excuse for not continuing is...... if your wheel blows to bits  :hello:

I did my first 'call home' ever.... (other than in an ambulance - but I didn't call it ) two weeks ago. - Worn out wheel, 120 PSI blew 1/4 of the rim off. Normally you'll get a crack, or a big dent, nope - not this time

I went the long way home that night, and it happened at the furthest point from home. BANG

Ah well.

I won't mention I told the 'best half' and kids to come out in my car as it had the bike rack on the roof (for 4 bikes), and then I realised some minutes later, the clamps were locked - the key is on my set.

I then had to take wheels off a fixed, and the guards, and the rack to get it in my boot - wished I'd been on a normal road bike. Wheels off and in.

Sh1t happens some times. PS the bloody baby wipes in my panniers came in handy - my hands were black after faffing about with the chain. My car is beige inside !

Isn't it a rule of thumb that a new bike comes with rubbish puncture-prone tyres? Should it be the first upgrade to consider?

Depends upon how much your new bike costs.

£120 Decathlon Rockrider 5.1 - turd tyres, need swapping ASAP.

£1000 CAAD9, Schwalbe Durano.

As a rule of thumb though, yes I agree it'sprobably the first thing you should check.

When the farmers used shears attached to the tractors most of the cuttings fell to the ground on the verge. Now they use a flail it spreads it all over the damn road. I'd love to sue the beggars for the damage and inconvenience, they're quick enough to complain if some moron blocks the entrance to a field with a car.
