My dad did say the same thing though, that it shouldnt just bend over like that.
It doesnt have any of the indentations thats on the double chain ring on the Giant. It was the cranks and chainring that was £25. It had a chain guard which was taken off

cranks should be ok as they can take a bit more punishment, should have binned the ring though.

I bought an RPM single speed crankset that included the ring and thought the ring looked dodgy so i binned it, that crankset cost me £35 on ebay, cranks are fine though. Stuck a thorn single speed ring on that and its solid.

My guess is that it's a chain ring for a bike with hub gears. It wouldn't be designed for the kind of force you'd get on a singlespeed.
