Me too! I genuinely have pogonophobia. The darker and hairier it gets, the worse the pogonophobia!

So far I've never been asked to remove mine. I often forget it is on my head, and if it isn't then I will have to carry it in some other way, and swinging from my pannier is definitely likely to do more damage (speaking from experience).

I think I might be tempted to take it off and give it to him to look after whilst I was in the store, if he was so concerned about it. My bobble hats cover more of my face than my helmet.
