In the days when I wore a helmet, I'd rather wear it than carry it for two reasons.
1. I want both hands free for shopping etc.
2. If it's swinging about in my hand, it's likely to bash against stuff, constantly weakening it.
Perhaps threaten to sue TESCO if your helmet knocks against a shelf, on the grounds that it'll need replacing...
