Hello from the NE
Brand new to the site (been lurking for a while) so thought I'd sign up for a little help and advice as I like to tinker with my bike regarding maintenance (and I mean tinker). I'm an elderly bloke and have a Specialized Sirrus Hybrid which is used every day more or less. I am what you would call a plodder, do'nt do big inclines if they get to heavy I get off and push, no set routes, times or speeds, just follow my nose and enjoy the fresh air and freedom that cycling gives me, and of course the exercise. This attitude may differ to some, but it suits me and I love it. Hope this post goes where it should as I have said I am brand new.

Welcome to the forum oily rag.

freedom fresh air and exercise ,I cant think of any better reasons to ride a bike.

Thanks for the welcome Banjo. Got loads of stuff going through my head, just need a little time to get familiar with the site.(I'm not a techno wizard as you may have guessed.

Hi, new to everything bike! No idea what I'm doing but I've won a Raleigh Airlite Aura and I intend to use it! I've lost 2 stone since I started cycling in earnest and I hate, hate, hate hills and as I live in Sussex, there are plenty. I'm hoping that I will come to love them! I'm also hoping that eventually my bum will stop hurting

Hi Shaun
I've joined as I'm looking for advice on buying a bike. I've posted in What bike?
I haven't owned one in 12 years and thought it would help me to get fit.
I live in Tyne & Wear.

Hi

4 weeks ago my son asked if he could cycle up the road. I refused (it's quite busy and I'm over-protective), so he asked if I would go with him. I glanced towards the garage to the Boardman Pro Hybrid I bought on an absolute whim about 8 years ago (used once) and then at my expansive girth and said no. I doubted whether or not I would make it 10 yards up the road. I'm very, very heavy and I just couldn't face the shame of me enveloping the bike. A friend was there at the time and chirped up to my son with "I'll take you out for a ride next week". Son looked very happy.

I thought about it a lot that night. Felt embarrassed and ashamed that I couldn't even take my son for a ride.

Next morning, he and I took the bikes out. It almost killed me, 8 miles in the Cotswolds, with him waiting for me at nearly every stage. Since then, I've been out 7 times, including over to the cycle trail in the Forest of Dean (which I thought was fantastic). I'm certainly improving, covering a gradually lengthening distance, and I've lost 1st 9lbs in that time too (after the initial 1st in a week, its at 3lbs per week now) on about 1600 cals a day.

The bike, understandably, let me down at the weekend; buckled wheel. I suspect I'm going to have to invest in some stronger wheels for a bit.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it and the difference it's made to my well-being is palpable. I hope to read and learn lots while I'm here.

All the best

Hello,

So you've signed-up, got your user account, now all you need to do is get posting .... ah, um, er, What do I say?

Well, it's dead easy - just say Hello and tell us a little bit about yourself and whereabouts you're from (so we can invite you along to rides!!)

Believe me, once you get that first post under your belt you'll be off!

My name's Shaun by the way, and I own and operate CycleChat.

If you need any help or advice on using the forums, or want to ask a question but don't want to do it publicly - just send me a PM (private message).

Hope you enjoy, and welcome to CycleChat

Cheers,
Shaun

Hi!

I'm Jeni,a 40-something southerner who lives in South Manchester, and relatively new to cycling (well, a 25 year hiatus anyway!). I bought myself a bike back in February after having a mini-stroke and being told to sort out my health and fitness, caught the cycling bug and am well and truly addicted now. I managed to do the Manchester to Liverpool ride in May and have signed up for the Manchester 100km in August - any tips and/or motivational speeches etc greatly appreciated ^_^ Bike is a hybrid which was a good purchase when I wasn't sure how much I'd use it but am now wishing I'd spent a bit longer researching them before I bought it. It'll be a while before I can afford to upgrade to a new one! Anyway, hello all!

Hi all, new after lurking for a bit. Ride a bianchi single speed, just started some longer 40m + rides and enjoying (?!) trying out some steeper (for me) hills as part of it. Not that fast but maybe with practise!! Looking to get into mountain biking as I've not really tried that before and it looks fun!
