Hi all, been cycling for a few years, done a few sportives, ride to and from work every day(3.5miles each way) planning on doing he London to Paris net year, this forum seems good!

Hello,

So you've signed-up, got your user account, now all you need to do is get posting .... ah, um, er, What do I say?

Well, it's dead easy - just say Hello and tell us a little bit about yourself and whereabouts you're from (so we can invite you along to rides!!)

Believe me, once you get that first post under your belt you'll be off!

My name's Shaun by the way, and I own and operate CycleChat.

If you need any help or advice on using the forums, or want to ask a question but don't want to do it publicly - just send me a PM (private message).

Hope you enjoy, and welcome to CycleChat

Cheers,
Shaun
Many thanks.. the learning curve using the site starts in earnest. ;-)

Hi,
My name is Paul, I'm new to cycling (apart from having a bike as a kid); Im looking into the cycle to work, as a way of dropping a stone or two. My commute is 6 miles each way.

So basically I havent a scooby about what I need so prepare for lots of stupid questions.

I have not been on a cycle for more years than I care to remember, infact didnt have gears in my young days, however would like to get some sort of fitness level back to normal and have been advised by GP to perhaps take up cyclying for many health reasons, however I find myself flumaxed as to what bike I would need or want. I think the less gears the better, but wonder what others might recommend. I am not fit enough yet to be tackling any gradient that remotely looks like a hill , lol, but was thinking maybe the commute to local town and back to start with might be a good plan, something easy, but that still doesnt tell me what sort of bike I may need as hoping as I become more proficient that I may start using somewhere like the canals etc..........HELP please

Hi Dorothy and :welcome:. Welcome also to our other recent new members.

There is a huge choice of bikes out there so it might be best if you have a look around a few bike shops and see what takes your fancy. I suspect the bike you're looking for is what the trade likes to call a "hybrid" (I hate the term because it is used as a catch-all for bikes that have flat handle bars but aren't a mountain bike ).

My sister has recently bought an older version of the Dawes Mojave: Link, which she is finding good to ride. If you want something simpler gear-wise they also do these in their classic range, which might suit.

As you're in Birmingham, Decathlon shouldn't be too hard to get to. They have a range of bikes which you might like.

Just a couple of ideas to get you started.

I'm Richard and the wife's Sally and daughter Amy live in East Yorkshire.
Just getting back into the saddle to try and drop a few pounds! It's been a while!
We only do safe family jaunts at the mo.

Hello All, I've recently moved to Micheldever, near Winchester, to start a new job. I've just bought a road bike and after a couple of decent rides I've decided that I won't disgrace myself completely if I find a local group to join. Hopefully I'm not being over optimistic, any local contacts would be much appreciated! Liv

Hi, just signed up, haven't had a proper look round the site yet but I will get to it. Thought I'd introduce myself first. I'm 35 and from the North East of England. I bought myself a cheap mountain bike in the summer of last year (£100 from Halfords) with the intention of going out every other day and gaining a bit of fitness after a back injury, anyway, I went out on it about twice and the bike sat in the shed the rest of the time.

I got the bike out again last month with a little more determination this time to keep riding and I have to say I think I've been bitten by the bug. I love it now, I'm pretty much out riding every day (as much as family life allows anyway with a wife and 2 kids), I'm not going very far as yet, I've only been doing about 5 miles or so at a time, as I say, back injury, so just taking it easy. I did progress up to a 11 mile ride just last night though and thoroughly enjoyed it so there's hope for me yet. Hoping to eventually go out for longer rides as time progresses.

Anyway, enough about me for now, looking forward to 'meeting' new people here and getting to know more about bikes and cycling in general.

Thanks!
