Only if your bike is 8 speed and the disc is the right size.

I wish I could see your hub, there isn't much that can go wrong with a hub unless it has been ridden for a very long time with the bearings badly out of adjustment. I would still suggest that the mechanic just can't be bothered to sit down and re-tighten the cones correctly or doesn't know how to do this simple job. Take the wheel to a proper bike shop and get an opinion from a real mechanic.

Edit: your picture has just popped up. Where is the axle? The fact that somebody has removed it confirms what I've written above; the bearing cones are loose and the mechanic can't be bothered or doesn't know how to set them up. Can you post a close up pic of the axle with the cones and the balls with all the grease cleaned off?

Also your saddle is tilted too far forward, you must have found the bike very uncomfortable. The saddle should be flat or even tilted up at the nose by a couple of degrees.

Well like i said i dont know much about bikes, from its specs but it apparently has 18 Speed?...not a clue.

I looked at the bearing rings and they look fine,I think the problem is with the hub itself...when you stick your finger in ,You can actually move something in there slightly up and down...but i have no clue what it is.

the guy at the bike shop did not even bother putting it back together, just put all the pieces in a bag.

Im just really annoyed that my local bike shop put in no effort at all into fixing my problem or getting me a new wheel, took him two days to do nothin and now im stuck with a back wheel in bits and no knowledge on what wheel i need.

He also mentioned that the part of my bike at the back which holds the back wheel on looked bent to him,but when me and my dad looked at it it does not look bent to us.

Sounds like the cones that hold the bearings inside the hub are loose. Even if the bearings are shot it is not a big job to fix. If the cones need tightening it should take now more than 5 minutes (very liberal estimate). I would demand to see the manager and ask if that standard of service is deemed acceptable.

Looks like il just have to get another bike,There isnt any more bike shops around my area and i just know it will cost at least £55-60 for a new Rim.

Guys how is this bike

Corratec XVert Motion Hardtail Bike 2009

I want something that will last.

Why do you need a mountain bike if you are only riding to work? Are you riding up mountains? It will be heavy and slow especially with those fat knobbly tyres. Get a hybrid; you will still have plenty of gears but you will get lighter weight, narrower semi-road tyres and much more speed. You won't believe how much faster it will be on tarmac and you will still be able to ride it on towpaths, tracks etc.

A valid argument. However being told that a new bike is needed because a wheel is shafted is rather unfair IMHO. If the OP does go down the new bike route then yes a Hybrid would be a better bet but if he wanted to keep the bike he has I see no reason why is can not be fixed (based on information available).

Sorry but the mechanic is a tosser. He should be able to explain to you exactly why he thinks the hub is beyond repair. Even if the axle or cones are damaged they can be replaced. He is trying to get you to buy a new bike that you don't need. If there are no proper bike shops near you, find a cyclist who can fix it. Ask around for a local bike club, contact them and ask if any of the older, retired members can show you how to reassemble the hub; they will be more than happy to do this for a couple of bottles of beer. Where in the country are you? If you were in Lancs I would fix it for you myself, then send you back to show it to that crap mechanic.

Well from what i can gather my local bike shop is family run..with one been the owner and the other three chaps been his sons...im sure they are,Doubt i would get very far,Plus who am i who knows nothing about bikes to question them...i can understand what your saying though.

I choose a mountian bike because where i live, even though i ride on the road theres ALOT of bumps/put holes everywhere and i have to cut through the town and over a mud path to get to work..plus i like how mountian bike have nice chunky tyres.

I would love to keep my current bike,Its not let me down (apart from this one prob) and its nice to ride but like i said before if its going to cost for example £45-50 at the cheapest for a new wheel...whats sayingthat a couple of months down the line the same problem appears again because the guy at the bikeshop made out the back part of my bike which holds the wheel was slightly bent and thats what could have caused the issue in the first place.

Just confused at the moment...do i need a new wheel...do i need a new bike...is the back part actually bent? lol

He couldnt really explain what was wrong with it other than shove his finger in the hole and move it up and down on the last pic i took and say thats your problem and that because it was cheap metal it was beyond repair and that he could not get another wheel to suit my bike....that was it.

I wish i lived near you too,I bet its a simple job. :/

I live in the Midlands,Stourbridge.

Without seeing the wheel it is very hard to answer that question. However even if the wheel is beyond repair a wheel for £45/50 should last you the remainder of the life of the bike. I use them on my MTB which gets a real hammering and have been through two in the last 2 years. If that had been on road use I think I would still be on the first one.

That really does sound as though the cones and bearings need tightening or replacing. The rim metal in that case makes no odds at all. How many cogs are on the rear wheel. Does it have disk or rim brakes?

If the bike is an "18 speed" I wonder if it has a screw on freewheel. I have never looked but are such hubs readily available with discs. I know they are still quite common with rim brakes, but with discs?. I just wonder if this may be the problem the bike shop referred to with respect to getting a new wheel.

Pop into your local scrap metal merchants if any around you ... you might find a bike there with a suitable back wheel for a few quid or keep an eye out for scrap van (we have loads around here) they might have a bike on the back they've picked up somewhere.
