the carrera bike i have (or had, it's now so upgraded) was great from the start, set up by a fine mechanic who now works in a proper bike shop.
my wife's apollo which does about 3 rides a year has only been rendered useful with some better brakes and a s/h set of solid forks from the lbs, along with judicious use of bottom bracket tools. it's quite a decent ride now, what with the geax slicks that i put on.
my daughter's apollo was so poorly set up that when she turned right the rear brake activated!
my advice is to only buy from halfords if it's the carrera or boardman range, and only if you're competent and tooled up to build the bike from scratch. unless you know that the mechanics are decent of course…
