Cool - a good result. What model is the hybrid?

That is a big relief. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that was working out how to tell you that you had a pile of over-priced rubbish there, but without upsetting you and putting you off cycling for life.

Rocky start - now on track, and two positives - your boyfriend did his bit with flying colours, and you now have a group of virtual friends to give you support.

+1,

I've also had to bite my tongue over your choice of bike/supply of bike from Halfords. Hopefully that's you sorted now.

Well done your boyfriend!

Good luck with the new bike and remember to keep us posted.

Halfrauds are making changes "We are creating a new role of Bikehut Sales Manager and will retain trained sales assistants to advise customers on the correct choice of bikes and accessories. These colleagues will build all new bikes and offer a full repair service." This might look like good news until you find that "The majority of specialists are being made redundant, within BikeHut".

So you are far better off going to a real bike shop, unless you know what you are looking for.

I've bought bikes from Halfrauds. My current GT (now consigned to commuter duties) was bought from them at less than half price in a sale some years ago and it's been the bargain of the century for me. I've also bought bikes for my children from them. But in no case did I expect anything more than a bike that was more or less properly assembled, in all cases I thoroughly checked and adjusted them after purchase.

So I agree with you that you should only buy a bike from Halfords if you know exactly what you want and you are confident enough to set it up properly.

Great news . Hope your new bike gives you long and happy service. You really do need to learn how to make basic adjustments to derailleurs ,brakes etc .Even a quality bike needs tweaking from time to time. Theres some good video tutorials on the net.

Heres one to get you started http://bicycletutor.com/adjust-rear-derailleur/

Perhaps I'm thinking too much into this, but I wonder what it says about general attitudes towards cyclists that the 'motoring on Dave' adverts sponsored by Halfords only show a kid when advertising bicycles.

I agree with Debian there are some great bargains to be had from Halfords come sale time, and the service seems to be a hit and miss thing which varies from store to store, the (older) guy in the Exeter store is very knowledgeable and a good mechanic

I had a fantastic bargain from Halfords so I can't complain. £900 scandium cross bike down to £400. If I had to get it sorted elsewhere (which I didn't btw) I'd still be well in the money. Those Boardmans look great too

Buying from Halfords is like buying a bike in a card carton from a LBS website.
You have to build it yourself.

Yes but the parents of kids who buy them bikes - don't know how to.... so you end up with the cables being incorrect, and forks on the wrong way round etc. Plus you often start off with what can be a very heavy bike.
