Project #2 due to start very soon, Nishiki Altus 21 speed Hybrid conversion.
I am going to fit shallow drop handlebars, slick road tyres , some kind of rapid fire shifters (sti?? not sure yet) and clipless pedals.
It is a very lightweight bike so should make a nice light tourer.

Progress,........... Schwalbe amber sidewall city slicks, specialised dropbars, aero brake levers, shimano rapid fire shifters (my personal preference), all new cables, new brake blocks. White wrapped bars and waiting the arrival of a white charge spoon saddle and Shimano Pd-m424 clipless pedals.

Why did you chose to have where you change gears so far away from where you brake?

the majority of the time i will be riding with hands on top of the bars so it makes sense (to me) to have the shifters up there and i can still brake on the rear wheel whilst changing gear as I approach junctions etc.

After taking the Nishiki for a good long ride out i have discovered the chain rings and cassette are badly worn and considering the bike is twenty years old and still on its original set up its hardly surprising. i have bought new crankset and gone from the original 42-32-24 chain wheel to 48-38-28 .
i removed the old cassette last night and twenty years of grime and rust resulted in an hour long battle to get the locking ring undone despite having the correct tools for the job, it was absolutely solid and when it finally came loose I discovered it had a considerable build up of rust inside the cassette and under the locking ring.
The rear derailleur is also getting replaced with a new Shimano tourney as the original is completely shot, so new crankset, chain, cassette and rd should see it running "as new" again.

Got the Bike pretty much completely finished now, new cassette, derailleur, chain and crankset + new adjusable stem. Haven't got the handlebars set up quite right yet so they do look a bit high in the pictures.
