Yesterday (driving my c*r) I was following a cyclist for some distance. It was an undulating road, and he was cycling fast, so the average speed would have been about thirty miles an hour. The road is bendy, twisty and with limited visibility around bends. It is also narrow, frequent double while lines, and passing through villages with 30 mph limit.
So I kept my distance, about four or five or even slightly more cycle lengths behind him. He was in the middle of his lane. Rightly so, IMO, because even if he was near the side of the road, I could not have over-taken him safely. So far so good.
The driver behind me, was not so patient. So I dropped back a bit further, so that if the **** behind me, managed to over take me, he would at least have room to tuck in behind the cyclist, if necessary.
But the driver overtook me, and started to cut in. I do not think he considered that I was driving at less than the speed limit for a good reason. He probably did not know the cyclist was there until he was virtually on top of him. As he was cutting in front of me, he was headed straight for the cyclist and had to swerve out again to avoid the cyclist. Is that my mistake?
My question is this, was I wrong to leave such a gap between me and the cyclist. If there had been less of a gap, the car would not have been able to cut in like that and endanger the cyclist. Or is there really no accounting for the actions of impatient twerps.
I ask this question because I really absolutely do not want to see such a close call again, and am wondering if I was doing the correct thing in allowing such a space in front of me. Your advice would be appreciated.
