Just booked the pick up for my rear wheel to be shipped to D Tek, the bike shop that is building my recumbent trike. £15.99 didn't seem to bar until you read the insurance.. £5 per kg. So £35 provided free... Now as £79.99 for insurance to cover contents!

Wow. The wheel must be a valuable wheel then!
Yep, it has a Rohloff hub in it, and the rim is a special rim needing a certain brake block, designed to give extra stopping on a laden touring bike. Plus the tyre, the external gear changer mechanism for the hub, the oem plate to attach it to the bike frame and a few other bits... The Rohloff hub alone is £1,050 before you have had the wheel built.

But they are worth every penny. It makes maintenance so much easier and components last much longer than on derailleur systems and I don't have to do indexing! Something I'm useless at. An oil change every 5,000km is all that is needed.

I understand now .

Out of my price range I'm afraid.
We sold everything we owned and my oh took voluntary redundancy so we could afford them for touring around the world. It was the only way we could afford them. It's now 3 years old and there is no way I could afford it today! Hence why it is being reused on a trike for me, less maintenance to do when you can't do it through a bad back and paralysis...

Do I need to get the spray plaster out?
Bertha has a lowly Sturmey Archer Hun thingy that is a dynamo as well as brakes and gears... I get the lovely Nick the Urge bicycle man to come out and do the stuff to it once a year

Yep we went with dynamos as well, but it was to complicated to make it work on a trike, and the front wheels are 20" not 26" so I would have had to have the wheel rebuilt, so just left it as was. At some point I have to get a new size inner tube or two spare... Must remember, that and some new patches plus look at the cycle breakdown cover options because if I do get a flat tyre I don't I'll be able to deal with it myself sadly..

I must confess, I'm regretting sending my old Palm Beach to the dump all those years ago. It needed a lot of work but I'm sure I could have done something with it.
