This was something that has been waiting to come home to roost since the 1980's campaign and the first "litmus test"(e.g. throwing everyone who wasn't right wing or ultra right-wing out of the party to appease the Reaganites)thereby robbing the Republicans of centrist and near left support in favor of the support of the religious right and "Moral Majority" voters.
