Flew in from Caleta De Fuste on Fuerteventura in the Canary Isles yesterday evening after an excellent holiday, stepping out of the plane at Birmingham was a bit of a shock after the mid twenties temperatures we'd had all week, we've ditched the factor 30 and will be digging out the thermals later.

My PC backup job finished. It backed up 440GB of data, 'compressing' it into 429GB (so I won't bother using the compression option next time). To backup the files took 14 hours, then another 9 hours to verify that the backed up files matched the original files. Yes, the whole process took just short of 1 day. I suspect the compression option slowed it down considerably. I was also backing up to an external hard disk connected to the PC via a USB 2.0 cable, so the data transfer rate wasn't terribly good.

All this was complicated by me trying a backup program I hadn't used before, so I had no idea how long it would take. I'll be running an incremental backup of the same set of files some time soon, but definitely not tomorrow or Saturday, as their respective maximum temperatures are predicted to be 39°C and 41°C. I definitely don't want to overwork the PC the next 2 days, or it will probably overheat.

So when are you going to test it?

I just did test it . That was the whole point of running the backup job, to see how this program performed. It looks good so far. Fortunately, future backups will be incremental, i.e. just saving files modified since the last full or incremental backup, so they won't take anywhere near as long as this one did.
However, I do need to run a few checks that the files can be restored. I'll just pick some at random, make a copy of the originals on my PC's normal hard disk, then use the backup program to restore these files. After all, there's no point backing up files that can't be restored, is there?
Anyway, I'm off to bed, as it's way past my usual bed time.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I have a blue ray player that turns my tv Into a smart tv apparently. I may try to send a film from my tablet via blue tooth to the blue ray player later. I don't have much confidance that it wil work mind you. These new fangled techi things often go above my head, but we shall see, or not as the case may be.

As an it engineer :becool:, the test I was referring to was that it was of some use after going through all of that. Backups are useless unless tested... And I hate incremental backups

Go and get some sleep! Life may make more sense tomorrow :whistle:
