More incisive journalism from the Beeb:

Or in other words "you know all this stuff we keep posting about fastest lap times - it's completely pointless which is why a Williams currently has fastest lap. We just don't know how else to report on practice sessions in a meaningful way that generates clicks"

I noted the other day Hamilton had done 'x' fastest lap..and 'y' was 0.339 secs behind him...and the commentator gleefully noted how close things were ?
Forgive me, a few years ago, 1/10 of a second was a huge amount of time to find...so another case of unnecessarily gushing, exaggerated commentary ?

Exactly. Very similar to the stick Carlton Kirby gets in cycling.
If you have 5 hours to fill you will sometimes get nonsense.
Ever listened to TMS? It’s non stop pointless stats. They even have a comedian doing the stats now, because they know they are so meaningless, but fun.

I do get that. It's just the constant pointless comparison of lap times during testing that annoys me because it's meaningless.
It's more interesting to look at how the drivers are feeling in the cars, how the cars seem to be performing on track etc. Ferrari and McLaren seemed very smooth on track and the drivers were happy. Red Bull were looking far less composed suggesting that they are not in the place that they want to be etc.

To be honest its one of the things that really disappointed me with Sky... i think i have said this before, but given how they fill endless hours blathering on about the ins and outs of every blade of grass, every kick and every gust of wind with kickball I expected them to do more with F1.

Not the inane showbiz waffle on the pre shows that sometimes feels more like it would be at home on loose women but some proper in depth technical stuff, data stuff, stats stuff, maybe employing someone who knows their onions like Scarbs (as opposed to the likes of Kravitz) and giving him the budget to do some decent graphics and animation explaining the aero and mechanical aspects, perhaps get a uni on board and showing off the hidden stuff behind F1. I cant imagine it would be expensive to produce, and there is plenty of space on the channel.

You could then do stuff illustrating the race sims and race strategy all sorts of geeky goodness.

I think there is the geeky appetite for it, i think there is more of an appetite for that than the contrived showbiz drama and guff that comes with the netflix DTS audiences but I guess geek TV isnt cool. One of the things that appeals to me with Motorsport, not just F1 is all those varieables and multitudes of things that come together, or dont, to make a race

If it was good, i'd even be tempted to re-subscribe to SkyF1

"When the flag drops the bullsh*t stops" . The F1 coverage is invasive , they nearly follow the drivers into the toilet ! A lot of presenters of the fair sex who are there for political reasons ( BUT NOT BERNIE COLLINS WHO IS SUPERB ! ) and a lot of men who are more of a fashion statement/ shock than knowledgeable .

Jade Edwards on the BTCC coverage is excellent, as is Jennie Gow and Alice Powell on Radio 5 Live. But two out of the three are drivers, and Jennie has been doing the BBC coverage for yonks.

In other news, four-time champion Colin Turkington will not be taking part in this year's BTCC.

His seat at WSR has been taken up by Charles Rainford, who finished runner-up in the Porsche Cup last season.
