I gave up with M&S. They just don't seem to own any measuring tapes. I get that they want to lie to us about our waist size. I'm currently wearing size 38 inch jeans. I know full well that my waist ain't no where near 38 in actual inches. However... I am the possessor of short legs. I need a 28 inch leg, 29 inch at the most. The last time I bought 29 inch leg at M&S they were 31 inches long.

Since then I have discovered that Amazon will send me comfortable jeans which are the length stated. I still get shirts at M&S but very rarely trousers.

Not necessarily. I've run into the same thing sometimes. The freakin' zipper only goes down halfway. Enough to get them on, but not enough to take care of "business." At least, if you're wearing your pants around your waist instead of pushed down on your thighs.

I've noticed this with modern trousers too. My suspicion too is that they're intended to be worn half-hanging off, as is the fashion, and so the zip is much lower than if the trouser waist-band were at a decent height above the hip bones.

This summer I was "persuaded" to throw out some Wrangle jeans

as far as age goes they were flares - and were in fashion when I got them
and they were 32 inch waist - which dates them to the 70s

and they still fitted just fine

which does NOT mean I am still a 32 inch waist - just that when I bought them the fashion was for the waist band to be around you hips
and my problem is -err - a bit higher up

I did only use them for paiting and the like - especially things that involved wellies so the legs were tucked in and the flares were hidden

but the point is - yes - there is a point

they had lasted and were still the same size
unlike my current ones that are about a year old and fitted when I got them
and now are 2-4 inches wider at the waist!!!
