I find it a bit depressing that these companies can exist.

Then again many years ago a mate of mine went into an Evans and asked them to fix a puncture. The Evans guy said I can sell you an inner tube for £3 and lend you all the tools you need or it'll be £20. I think he thought he was pricing himself out of the market. He didn't, my mate stood and watched him change it.

What is a 'London'?

And now for some anti-spam ... don't rely on some firm or long-suffering partner to sort out your puncture problems - learn how to do the job yourself and carry the required spares and tools on every ride!
You'd be amazed ColinJ - people have paid me (well I might add) to drive 20 miles to fix their puncture! And I get regular calls to people's houses to do the same. I always ask what they do if they happen to be out riding and get one - they usually say they ring the other half & get a lift home. It's amazing really

I find it hard to believe that a regular cyclist wouldn't know how to change a tube or fix a puncture. I've always carried a spare tube and some patches and glue (in case I get 2 punctures) in my very small seatpost bag.
Even as a schoolboy I patched my own punctures. Admittedly I pushed the bike home first, as school was only 2 miles away. I only pushed it home as my bike didn't have quick release wheels and the whole process was a bit more involved with a chainguard and spanners.

Yeah but having said that, when I was about 14 I was out in the Peak District with a long ride home to Stockport still to come, the heavens opened, and I punctured. I changed to the spare tube but within a mile, that had punctured too. I hadn't checked the inside of the carcass, and there's a shard of glass in there. So I remember to remove that, and went to the backup of the patches and glue. With nowhere good to shelter and with sodden hands, clothes and rubber... could I get a patch to adhere properly? Could I buggery. It took me hours to get home... the best I managed was to get a half seal which deflated every mile or so, prompting a stop for a reinflation. To cap it all, I was approached by a pervert who tried to touch me up. Yup, bad day.

Thankfully I've not had a ride as bad as that since, and admittedly it's usually a quick and final option to swap the tube out.

As well as spare tubes I have some glueless patches. Due to some fantastic luck they are 4 years old and still sealed in pack. How long will they last? Should I get some new ones? The ones I have I got to put my EBC order up to get free postage.

I think at 4 years old they'll still be absolutely fine. I'd probably swap them out in another few years time, maybe at 7 or 8 years, but then I'm paranoid. If the seal's good they should last indefinitely, but for the sake of a few quid I wouldn't want to test the theory on a wet night in New Mills with bum fondlers roaming the countryside. :-)

Who do you think you are, @Markymark ?
Real Londoners don't keep banging on about London, only wannabe Londoners do that. My guess is that @Markymark lives on the outskirts of London, and just wishes that he were a few miles further in. Probably he also has an old Nokia phone too, that he curses every time he passes the Apple Store and gazes, drone-like, through the window at the sleek trinkets therein. ;)

It wouldn't be possible to get the size of house and land I require in the inner city slums that is true.

Well, write it down boy ......
When I was a cub leader (cubs are between 8 and 10 1/2) for the "cyclists badge" I would teach them how to fix a puncture and then they had to demonstrate it to me a couple of weeks later. I know for a fact that one of them could do it in the wild after that as I came across him about a year later fixing one whilst I was out on a ride. Brought a tear to my eye it did.
