I find it a little strange that the Danish settlers are referred to as "they" in the poem. "They" are "our" ancestors, not a separate group.

"They" doesn't mean separate at all. If I'm talking about my grandparents, or even parents, I will refer to them as "they" when using a pronoun.

Ancestors further back, even more so.
