I've read quite a lot about Tom Crean, Ernest Shackleton and Captain Scott but I must admit I never of this.

French war Memorial in Merkolsheim. It includes a memorial in the centre "to the young men forced to leave and fight for NS Germany in World War II". What with this and the French forcing German men to fight for their empire a century earlier, it's a wonder there were any young men left in the region.
