Had another quote today from Spokesman Wheels

For riders of your weight, we would suggest either a set of alloy wheels built using H plus Son SL42 rims or deep section carbon rims.

The SL42 rim will take 28mm tyres but we would probably recommend 25mm for more stable handling. The carbon rims are wider and can use a 28mm tyre easily.

Assuming your bike has rim brakes (not discs) then a SL42 32/32 spoke build with Sapim Race spokes would be a very strong option. Great for commuting or general use.
If you would prefer something which looked more 'sporty' then a 24/28 spoke build would also be suitable.
Hubs for a rider of your weight should have a steel axle in order to reduce flex. For a 32 spoke build we would recommend either Shimano 105 or Miche Primato hubs. For a 24/28 spoke build Miche Primato would be best.
Cost with black SL42 rims, choice of hubs, silver Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples will be £285 inc QRs, rim tape and UK delivery.
Options you may like to choose:
Black Race spokes +£20
'Black' brass nipples +£6

A build using 50mm deep x 25mm wide carbon clincher rims in 28/28 spoke format is £180 more

Is it possible to run a bike with a different wheel on the back than the front as in a different rim and hub or not. To keep costs down could I just get a rear wheel

I hadn't logged in for a few days......

To the OP @chrisb1357

I quickly read through the thread.....

First chiice: Very decent hubs... no issues there. Rims, Ryde Sputnik, cheap rims that are supposed to be durable, I have not used them but other Sputnik rims are pretty durables though.
Spokes: No issues with that either nor the choice of nipples.
Cost: About average I'd say. If they are built well then they are worthy.

Second choice : Rose wheels..... they are a bit of a hit and miss with them. Good components but sometimes from the start they show issues. Somebody here bought a set and had nothing but problems and I have fixed a couple too.... badly built wheels the ones I saw.
Cost: I could not buy the components for less money.... that tells you everything.

Third option: 32 spokes or carbon deep section 24/28 rims..... at your weight.... he can't be serious.....

Only rear wheel, if you don't mind that then there's no reason why you can't have just the rear wheel replaced.

Just seen this wheelset on the Spa Cycles site so I have drop them an email to see what they say. Not how well the O-Lite hubs are rated

Unfortunately your weight is part of the problem but I've built Shimano 105 hubs onto Mavic Open pro with 36 spokes
and so far they have held up to riders around the same weight.
Shimano 105 (5800) onto Mavic Open pro black built with silver Sapim Race spokes £235.00 plus post at £20.00.
You might be able to get some 28c tyres in your bike but different brands come up bigger than others.
Michelin come up bigger than Vittoria.

Decided to go with the local wheel builder near me and went the Miche Primato Syntesi 36-spoke hubset, Ryde Sputnik 36-spoke rims, Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples.

Just need to find some 28mm tyres that will fit between the frame as its already a tight fit with 25mm

You may wish to skim this thread and see the measurements I took of my tyres (sold as 28s) - see post #29 on Page 3. Data on actual v quoted width of the various makes/models of tyre is in short supply (as far as I can find). You either need chubby 25s (ie tyres that come up more than 25 at 110psi) or slim 28s. It doesn't matter what they are sold as: it's the actual width that will allow you to carry your weight on the rear wheel without excessive (ie over max spec) pressure. I hope the Sputnik 36h are at least 15mm, preferably 17mm inside bead width. Remember that, besides width, the height dimension may come into play at the seat stay bridge or the chain stay bridge, especially if mudguards are to be fitted. However:

The Defy takes 28mm easily without guards.
