Bang on! Once they get loose they will break! Always lightly grease the threads on the hinges too, otherwise they seize up and cant be re adjusted when they come loose

The trick is to get them fastened as tight as possible when you first fit them.

Otherwise you can end up with a sideways creep and broken hinges. The rubber rests that stop it clanging down on the bowl don't always align correctly with the edges of the bowl and can jockey for position and force it to one side or the other. This movement breaks the hinges and that's when the trip to the DIY store becomes necessary.

Well, at least that's what my mate the plumber told me ...

Got boys in the house?

Banish the loo seat argument and the smelly splashes, get a home urinal; I installed one behind the door in our downstairs loo. It's got a fly in the glaze for aiming. The only problem is that it's so discrete that most visitors don't realise what it is.

For anybody who's interested, it's a Laufen Casa urinal: http://www.dezinebathrooms.co.uk/laufen-bathrooms-casa-urinal.html

I remember watching a programme about the history of urinals - yes I am that sad! - apparently a bee was originally used as a target. Apart from being something to aim at, it is also a pun - Apis, Latin for bee!

One thing that really infuriates me is the toilet seat that won't stay up when you lift it (usually due to the hinges having been fixed the wrong way around). So I have to hold it with one hand during the 'performance'. Bummer!

The worse one is when at someone elses house the loo seat stays up until mid flow when it suddenly slams down making you jump. Not only do you end up peeing on the seat but everywhere else too! Then you find there is only a couple of sheets of loo paper to mop up the splashes.

Well 6 years later one of the hinges has broken so just replaced it with a Bemis Denver complete with STA-TITE technology.

Some friends have a ‘soft close’ bog seat ie: it slowly lowers itself rather than having to close it all the way by hand.
Queue crashing splintering noise when she visited our loo....
Well, we needed a new seat anyway

Wooden bog seats are the only type worth having. None of your cold plastic things here! Had the same one for about 25 years now. I once had a GF who insisted that they should be replaced every year as they become unhygienic. I always thought that was what cleaning products were for.

Couldn't agree more @Brandane
I used to change my GF's every few weeks or sooner..they are a health risk
