I'm afraid that'll cause the battery to lose it's zero point (do they still do that?).

NiCads do but NiMH and Li-ion aren't supposed to.

Get yourself some backups - you ideally need two lights at each end.

back ups would've great, but the space on my handlebars is stupidly limited - it's a cyclocross with extra brakes on the bars, so it took me ages to find any light that would fit at all!

However, you speak the truth, and I'm going to have to buy another small fitting light (probably another flea tbh, unless anyone else knows of a light with a narrow fitting, where the bulky screw part of the fitting is at the rear of the bar) to leave on as a spare.

Or get a head torch. A pricey alternative but I've an Exposure Joystick and head band and I can quite easily ride in full darkness with no other lighting. (Although I believe that it would be illegal so I obviously only do it off road )
